Tulsa Man Hit, Killed By Train Near Mannford

Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating the death of a man that was hit by a train near Mannford.

The incident happened after 3 p.m. Tuesday, September 17.

OHP said a man was walking along the railroad tracks, and the train blew it's horn at the man. According to troopers, the man didn't stop; he was hit and killed by the train.

Troopers said the victim was wearing headphones and might not have heard the train. He has been identified as 32-year-old Dustin K. Day of Tulsa.

"When the train conductor saw the subject on the tracks he began to blare his horn all the way up to the point of impact; the gentlemen did not respond to it," said OHP Lt. Vern Wilson.

Records obtained from the Federal Railroad Administration show only one other accident at this rail crossing. It happened in July of 2016. The reports states that a freight train pulling 64 cars with two locomotives collided with a vehicle which did not stop.

"There is no reason for anybody other than railroad workers to be on the tracks. It's a very dangerous situation," Wilson said.

Dana Veteto lives just on the other side of the crossing and says her heart hurts for the man's family.

"For their family, it made me sick to my stomach," Vateto said. "You cannot walk on [the tracks] because you don't know that [the trains] are there until they're on top of you."

Troopers said parents need to teach their children to not walk on railroad tracks, so this wouldn't happen to them as well.
